Scale Definitions And Terms

Accuracy:

  • The smallest measurement a scale can accurately read.

BMI:

  • Body Mass Index. A function typically found with medical scales.

Capacity:

  • The maximum amount of weight a scale can read.

Check Weighing:

  •  Also called an over / under function. Scales with this ability notify the user with lights or a sound if the object placed on the platform is not within specified guidelines.

Counting Scales:

  •  A weighing device which can show you the amount of objects placed on it's platform based on the collective weight.

Dazzle:

  •  A software program provided by endicia.com that allows a user to print postage.

Detachable Face:

  •  An indicator that can be removed from the scale, usually on a chord.

Hold:

  •  A function which allows you to display the weight of an item on the indicator after the item has already been removed.

Indicator

  • : An electronic device which shows readings for a scale.

IP67:

  •  A rating which shows the scale or indicator to be waterproof.

LCD Display:

  •  Liquid Crystal Display,

Legal For Trade:

  •  A certification that allows the scale to be used in a commercial application where money is exchanged for goods or services based on weight.

Load Cell:

  •  A mechanism that scales use to read the amount of pressure on the platform.

Low Profile:

  •  A scale design that allows the platform to be as close to the ground as possible.

NEMA:

  •  A scale certification.

NSF:

  •  A scale certification.

Overload Protection:

  •  A device or mechanism which prevents damage to a scale when the weight placed on it exceeds it's capacity.

Parcel:

  •  A letter or box that is to be mailed or shipped.

PLU:

  •  A function which calls previously entered data to be used with counting or price calculating features.

Postage Calculating:

  •  A function which allows a scale to display postage costs based on the weight of a letter or package.

Price Computing:

  •  A scale, typically used in a retail environment, which provides pricing for items placed on the platform based on weight.

Repeatability:

  •  The smallest measurement at which a scale can consistently reproduce accurate results every time.

Resolution:

  •  The amount of divisions that go into a weight reading.

  •  A weighing platform which does not come with an indicator.

Tare:

  •  A function which allows the readout of a scale to be reset to 0 after placing an object on it's platform.

Wind Screen:

  •  A shield used on precision balances which prevents the local air currents from affecting a reading.

Worldship:

Zero Out:

  •  A function which forces the scale to reset it's reading to 0.
